This summer Scouts participating at Black Creek Scout Camp will become "citizen scientists" as they join a team effort to monitor the water quality of Black Creek, the primary tributary to Eagle Lake. Please watch this short video. Merit badges include Soil and Water Conservation, Insect Study, Nature, and two Eagle required badges: Environmental Science and Sustainability. Would your Pack, Troop, or Crew be interested in knowing your freshwater?
I found a great interactive Water Cycle from the EPA that could be used in a Cub Scout activity or lesson plan. This would also teach computer technology through ecology. http://www.epa.gov/safewater/kids/flash/flash_watercycle.html
I just saw your post on Facebook about teaming up with the local Scouts on water quality monitoring on Black Creek. We would love to work with your groups to develop an on-going, hands-on program. I have just recently hired a Watershed Outreach Coordinator to do this type of work! He won't start until the beginning of May, but I'll keep your information and have him contact you when he gets here.
You have my email address now too, so please don't hesitate to reach out or follow up if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks again for thinking of us and I look forward to working with you in the near future!
